The tomb of Ramses V and VI (KV9) is one of the largest and most spectacular royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings, stretching over 100 meters into the bedrock. Originally begun for Ramses V, it was later enlarged and completed by his successor and uncle, Ramses VI, who ultimately became its owner. The tomb is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved decoration. Its walls and ceilings are covered with vivid scenes from the Book of Gates, Book of Caverns, Book of the Dead, Book of the Earth, and the Amduat, illustrating the sun god’s journey through the underworld. The magnificent astronomical ceiling of the burial chamber, depicting the sky goddess Nut, is among the finest in Egypt. The burial chamber once contained a large granite sarcophagus, now heavily damaged, while numerous fragments of its decoration remain. Ramses VI’s mummy was later moved to the Royal Cache at Deir el-Bahari for protection. A surprising fact is that the entrance to KV9 lies directly above the earlier tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62). During the construction of Ramses VI’s tomb, workmen unintentionally covered Tutankhamun’s entrance with debris and spoil, helping to conceal it for over 3,000 years until its discovery by Howard Carter in 1922. #travels #mystery #History #egypt #luxor
