Ria Ayam Penyet, Melbourne CBD Ria Ayam Penyet first began in 1998 as a small warung in Batam, Indonesia. It was founded by Ibu Ruth and quickly grew into a much-loved chain known for its signature smashed fried chicken (ayam penyet) served with fiery sambal, tofu, tempeh and rice. From humble beginnings, it expanded across Indonesia and into Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Hong Kong and eventually Australia, with outlets in South Melbourne, Noble Park, Dandenong and Preston. Now, the cult-favourite brand has opened its newest store right in the heart of the city at 2/168 Exhibition Street. It’s already drawing lines out the door and plenty of buzz online. Here’s an overview of what we had: 💚 Es Cendol: loved this, super sweet & the pandan flavour was there ❤️‍🔥 Iga Bakar: my favourite dish, the beef was so tender with a flavourful lemongrass taste 🍗 Ayam Penyet: smashed fried chicken, great flavour, nice and moist still 🔥 Sate ayam: super juicy, the perfect size, perfect satay sauce 🍛 Beef rendang: not too spicy, with a delicious lemongrass hit, would’ve loved a touch more heat & depth 🥬 Gado Gado: super fresh & well balanced, not my favourite pick out of everything though! The menu items we tried were all under $20 with the most expensive being the grilled beef ribs at $17.50. I seriously loved everything we had and I cannot wait to come back! It’s a fantastic spot to pop in for a cheap & cheerful meal! No complaints here! 4.5/5 paid invite | #melbournecheapeats #melbournefood #indonesianfood #melbournerestaurant #cheapeatsmelbourne
