@janetphorner: I was on Newstalk yesterday discussing Dublin City Council proposals to cut off access to the Deposit Return Scheme to those who do not have private bin contracts. Not only is this a completely unworkable solution as a number of people including people in apartments don’t have bin contracts, it would be easily bypassed by asking a friend to return your bottles for you. Meanwhile real solutions that work in other countries like rings around bins for people to leave their bottles and cans for easy collection are ignored. People were actually texting this in as a solution while I was on air because they didn’t know the council already trialled this on a number of bins, and decided to cancel it rather than expand it. As councillors we push real and workable solutions like waste compactors for years before they actually get implemented. #Ireland #Dublin #DublinCentral #LitterDublin #DumpingInDublin @Green Party/Comhaontas Glas

I hate this scheme it's just an extra job there should be more pp laces to recycle them and I wish you just got money or credit bk on your card instead of having to use it in the particular supermarket that you recycled in.

When I was living in Charleston SC in the US, there was a homeless man that went through and neatly picked out cans from the recycling for extra cash. I then put them to the side for him to take so he didn’t have to dig even though he never made a mess. Maybe a solution for this is something similar. A bin for deposit bottles for people who can’t get to a center and homeless people don’t have to dig if they want to collect them.
