@pickleballinoz: 🏜️ Coober Pedy’s Underground Homes! At first glance, this looks like an ordinary living room. But there’s one big difference - it’s carved into the rock beneath the South Australian desert. These underground homes, known as dugouts, began when opal miners discovered it was far more comfortable below ground than above it. While summer temperatures outside can soar above 40°C, and occasionally approach 50°C, underground homes usually remain a comfortable 22-26°C year-round, requiring little or no heating or air conditioning. Around half of Coober Pedy’s residents still live underground. Step inside and you’ll often find everything you’d expect in a modern home - bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and lounge rooms. The only clue you’re underground is the beautiful sandstone walls. It’s one of the most unique ways of living anywhere in Australia - and perhaps the coolest home in the Outback. 🏜️🏠⛏️🇦🇺 #CooberPedy #SouthAustralia #OutbackAustralia #SeeAustralia #AustralianOutback
