The importance of credit history and why most banks don’t lend to small businesses 💰🏦📈 Most small business don’t know that the first few borrowing rounds should purely be for the purpose of building credit history, a relationship with the bank, and their credit score. This should be done when their business has more than enough funds and doesn’t need the money, and can repay it easiy. They should focus on borrowing less than they need and repaying it back on time and repeating the cycle until they get to the point when their business actually needs money, and by then, they’ll be able to borrow a larger amount, with less interest because they’ve already established a good relationship with the bank and proved that they’re a safe borrower! The biggest challenge that Small businesses repeatedly point to across surveys is access to finance. Banks are also blamed for not lending to small businesses, but if you see things from their perspective, they have their reasons. Small businesses want small money, which is expensive to give and collect when you’re relying on branch operations, small businesses also can’t provide their financial statements or transaction history as clearly as large businesses can which makes it hard for banks to determine cash flow and repayment capacity. Small businesses can’t also put up property collateral because in most cases, they don’t have property. So If a bank wants to lend it to small businesses, the bank needs to bridge this gaps by finding alternative sources for transactional history, alternative collateral, and disburse loans in a cost-effective manner, which is only possible through the use of technology. And that’s what cooperative bank of Oromia is doing through Michu digital loan. That’s a great place for Ethiopian small businesses to build a solid relationship and credit history, since the platform increases the loan amount and lowers the interest rate based on the borrower’s repayment history. Plus, Michu’s credit limit has increased 3X to 300k, so there’s no saying if it’s gonna be 1 million or 3 million some day, so it’s best to establish the relationship now, when the business doesn’t need too much money, and frequently borrow and repay to increase the limit. Although this is a microloan with a maximum term of 3 months, it’s a good place to start, and getting immediate disbursement without collateral for small businesses should be appreciated regardless of the term or interest rate. #ethiopia #fyp #coopbank #michudigitalloan #financialliteracy @Game Birhanu @Cooperative Bank of Oromia @Girum X
