Current Living Goddess The current Kumari of Patan is Nihira Bajracharya, who was enthroned on February 17, 2018, at the age of five. She succeeded Yunika Bajracharya. Key Details and Traditions Lineage: Unlike the Kathmandu Kumari, who must be from the Shakya clan, the Patan Kumari is selected specifically from the Bajracharya family of the Ratnakar Mahavihara (also known as Hakha Baha). Residence: She resides in the Kumari Chhen (Kumari House), located within the Ratnakar Mahavihar in Patan. Selection Criteria: The candidate must be a prepubescent girl with no physical blemishes, perfect health, and the “32 perfections” or auspicious marks. Lifestyle: While she lives a secluded life and her feet must not touch the ground during ceremonies, the rules for the Patan Kumari are often considered slightly more flexible than those for the Royal Kumari; she is sometimes allowed to live with her family or attend school with private tutors. Role in Festivals The Patan Kumari plays a vital role in local traditions, most notably the Rato Machindranath Jatra.
