I wemt to two different high schools. The first...small farm town in western IL. Couldn't tell you about the boys dress code, but girls were not allowed to wear shorts after a certain date in the fall or before a certain date in the spring. It didn't matter if they were dress shorts, worn as part of an outfit with pantyhose underneath, & as long as the skirts the other girls on the basketball team were wearing. It was past the date in the fall, so she had to change to ratty gym sweats for the rest of the day. (It wasn't me, but a friend.) They also had a strict "no street shoes on the gym floor" policy. Like, if you were sitting on the bleachers at lunch, you didn't cross the gym floor to get to the other side, you went up & around the outer rim of the gymnasium & you would absolutely get detention for multiple violations.
The second? Just outside Peoria, IL, much more urban, with no dress code from what I could tell, other than the Big Johnson shirts were banned. And maybe alcohol, tobacco & firearms branding. (It was the 90s, everybody had a tshirt with the Bud frogs or the Camel camel lol) There might've been a requirement that T&A had to be covered & I think sheer tops were banned senior year if you only had a bra underneath...but the gym floor? Anything went! I about had a heart attack my first week when I girls in flats & boys in boots!
