Grandma Elephant Kham Sean is unwell and suffering from chronic kidney failure. The veterinary team has been caring for her every day for a long time. Kham Sean has been at Elephant Nature Park since 2004. Earlier in her life, she was used for logging, and later for riding, before she became ill. When her health declined, her owner allowed us to rescue her because they could no longer use her. Kham Sean is blind in both eyes. Every day, she follows the voice of her mahout. She is a cautious elephant and is afraid of other elephants. We have tried many times to guide her back into a herd, but she always runs away. The one she trusts most is her mahout. Kham Sean is an incredibly resilient elephant. When she first arrived, she was in terrible condition. Her skin was inflamed and cracked all over, and all four of her feet were severely infected. With veterinary care, her physical condition improved, but her emotional healing took much longer. Due to her advanced age, Kham Sean has suffered from many health problems. She often had difficulty with bowel movements, and the veterinary team spent a great deal of time caring for her. Sometimes she would lie down and be unable to get up on her own. Lately, she has seemed more tired and walks much more slowly. She becomes exhausted easily, suffers from urinary incontinence, and sometimes it takes her nearly half an hour to walk less than one hundred meters. Every time we see an elephant become sick, we feel such deep sadness. When an elephant is ill, it is not like caring for a smaller animal. If they lie down and cannot get back up, the situation can become very serious. We have to help lift them to their feet again. Every day,we tell Grandma Kham Sean, “Be strong, Grandma. Please stay with us for a long time.” #KhamSaen #Elephant #ElephantRescue
