First, Abijah stands before Jeroboam's army of eight hundred thousand men with only four hundred thousand of his own. He is outnumbered two to one. But before the battle begins, Abijah stands on a mountaintop and declares the truth — God is with us. You have golden calves. We have the Lord. Jeroboam sets an ambush. Judah is surrounded on every side. But they cry out to the Lord, the priests blow the trumpets, and God strikes down Jeroboam's forces. Five hundred thousand men fall in a single day. It is one of the greatest victories in Israel's history. Then Asa rises to the throne. He tears down the idols, removes the high places, and leads Judah back to the Lord. When Zerah the Ethiopian marches against him with a million soldiers and three hundred chariots, Asa prays one of the boldest prayers in Scripture — Lord, there is no one besides You to help between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You. God crushes the Ethiopian army completely.
