UNFILTERED EMPATH #002 We need to talk about what happens when the overwhelming emotion is joy. Sometimes joy is so that my body needed somewhere to put the feeling. 😂 For me, that usually looks like laughter and/or tears. I am a loyal listener of The Spiritual Investor, hosted by Elizabeth Ralph. @elizabethralph A few weeks ago, I remember thinking: Wouldn’t it be fun if Elizabeth came on my podcast? Wouldn’t it be fun if we got to meet? That was it. I didn’t chase it. I didn’t try to figure out how to make it happen. And then today I realized… HER PUBLICIST EMAILED ME TO HAVE HER TO BE ON MY SHOW. WHAT?! And here’s the even funnier part: The original email had been sitting in my inbox for a couple of weeks. I HADN’T EVEN SEEN IT. Thank goodness her publicist followed up. When I finally realized what I was reading, I started crying. Which got me thinking about something we don’t talk about enough when we talk about being an empath. We talk a LOT about feeling other people’s emotions. We talk about absorbing the hard stuff. But sometimes our own emotions are a lot for us to hold, too. Especially the big ones. Joy, Excitement, Relief, Love, Awe. Sometimes they just… leak out. For me, that’s often tears. And laughter. My sister and I have something we call “the church giggle.” Put the two of us together during a church service, funeral, or any other situation where we’re containing a LOT of emotion, and eventually one of us starts giggling. Then the other one goes. And it’s over. 😂 My mom knows this so well that she tried to separate us at serious events because she knows what’s coming. Maybe that’s part of my experience of being an empath, too. Sometimes I don’t have words big enough for what I’m feeling, so my body finds another way to express it. Tears. Laughter. Sometimes both. And today? I’m letting myself cry the happy tears and laugh. Because someone whose work I’ve been listening to and appreciating is coming into my world for a conversation.
