I work in a senior activity center and I have CPR and first aid training. I am terrified of someone having a medical event because I have a tendency to panic or freeze in emergencies. I admire people who can think and act quickly in these situations.

As a person with Childhood Trauma my brain slows down & I get lazer focus in chaotic situations & become very calm .. ironically i will panic on a Tuesday in a Trader Joe’s because it’s crowded 😫🫢

I always feel bad for people who really beat themselves up for how they react in crazy situations. I don’t have the experience of people who have regularly had to deal with crazy stuff like you or EMTs etc., but in my limited experience I feel like the same person can respond much better or much worse than they’d expect depending on the circumstances, most of which are often out of their control.

at times when I am able to respond, I think its partially because I played contact sports. you have to make split decisions constantly. but thats after loootttsss of practice. I dont havs that level of practice and education in every part of life.

As a teacher, somehow I am always really good in emergencies...but I think I am lucky. I rarely panic..but afterwards..omg...it all hits me hard 😪

I feel like the people who say that; like you said, have NEVER been in an emergency situation I know in theory what to do when my car starts sliding in the snow but the first time it happens in the winter I always panic initially and react wrong and that is a WAY less intense situation usually

I already know this about myself which is why I avoid all of this wilderness, extreme sport whatever type of things. I will be less than useless in any type of difficult situation when we’re talking about physical danger. Professionally that’s different because I can remain emotionally detached and that’s what allows me to help my clients and deal with difficult people but that doesn’t mean I’m good in an emergency

When I almost got hit by a car I literally froze. Deer in headlights. Physically could not move. Afterwards I could not believe it and felt so much shame for not reacting by running. Your body does things you cannot control in emergency situations.

This is one reason I stopped sharing certain details of how I was abused in public. The "couldn't be me!" comments were hurtful and ignorant. That type of attitude can lead to disaster.

When I saw this accident, I was like that would be me. My nerves about the fall over would trump if I’m safely secured before I fall over. 😩
