@kianaloran: Some of these people hadn’t spoken in 40 years. Some had never met. For my entire life, old differences kept parts of our family apart. Stories were left untold. Relationships were left unfinished. Faces existed only in photographs. Then last week, everything changed in Cibolo, TX. It took more than four decades to bring us back to the same table. What followed was something I’ll carry with me forever. Sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews traveled from across the states to meet each other for the first time or to reconnect since being children themselves. Stories had waited decades to be told. Forty years of distance shrinking with every conversation, every tear shed, every hug, every shared memory. For the first time, I sat in a room full of people who looked like me, laughed like me, and wanted to know everything about the years we’d missed together. We gathered at my aunt’s restaurant, Kindling Texas Kitchen, where Chef Efren filled the tables with incredible food while our family filled the room with something even more meaningful: connection. I’ve replayed that weekend in my head a hundred times since coming home. I cry not because of what we had lost, but because of what we found again.
