@preventiveheartrx: Your Coronary Calcium Score is HIGH. As a cardiology pharmacist, here is exactly what I would do. 🚨 Getting a high Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) score can be terrifying, but it’s actually a powerful tool for prevention. As a healthcare professional, a high score isn’t a reason to panic I think of it more like a roadmap for action. A high CAC score indicates calcium buildup in the heart arteries, which is a sign of atherosclerosis. According to the latest clinical guidelines, depending on your risk and score, you will most likely need treatment to protect your heart long-term. 🛑 Here is my 3-step action plan: 1️⃣ The “Statin” Discussion: For high scores and low scores but high risk, research strongly favors starting statin therapy to stabilize existing plaque and prevent future heart attacks. 💊 2️⃣ Heart-Healthy Overhaul: Moving beyond just “eating better.” prioritizing a Mediterranean-style diet and hitting 150 minutes of weekly cardio to improve your health 🏃♂️ 3️⃣ Risk Factor Management: It’s not just about the score. I’m monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, and stress levels to ensure your heart isn’t under constant pressure. 🩺 A high score is a wake-up call to start taking care of your heart. Use this information to empower your journey and work closely with your healthcare team. Have you had your CAC score checked? My PCP had recommended calcium screening for several years. When I finally had it done I had a 513 so my PCP referred me to a cardiologist. She ordered and echocardiogram and a stress test. I was referred to a PharmD to discuss diet and statins.
Been on statin ever since.

Just found out CAC 1855.
I've been on Atovastatin for 7 yrs. cholesterol Hdl / Ldl, BP weight has been in guidelines. To get cleared for hernia surgery I also asked for additional tests. Lipoprotein (a) is 218. Moved forward with surgery last Wednesday. On Monday I had a nuclear stress test which indicates some blockage. Carotid artery 50%blockage. Heart echo was ok. im very active. Play pickle ball competitively. walk dogs for a mile most days. Tomorrow I will know when I will be scheduled for angiogram. Should I ask surgeon about Repatha?

My calcium score is 0, cholesterol is 219, but the mid LAD is 70% blocked. Was put on statins, blood pressure meds and blood thinner. I am 58 female, no smoking, healthy eating, moderate exercise. 🤷♀️

No, once calcium builds up in your coronary arteries, medical treatments and lifestyle changes generally cannot lower your calcium score. However, therapies like statins and heart-healthy habits stabilize existing plaque, significantly reducing your actual risk of a heart attack even if the score remains unchanged or slightly increases
once you have it nothing lowers it just keeps it stable
