In an ideal egalitarian upbringing, development might unfold in a more linear and coherent way. In reality, however, what we consciously know does not necessarily match what has been shaped through unconscious experience. Our conscious mind may not even be aware of the gap between the two, and in some cases the unconscious may construct a sense of continuity with the conscious self despite underlying inconsistencies. While trauma does not change DNA itself, it can influence gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms and may therefore affect the biological systems involved in stress regulation. In this way, trauma can contribute to shaping both unconscious patterns and the relationship between conscious and unconscious processes.

I think it's very much a white point of view, at least in the US. I've begun to challenge this in myself by focusing on empathy. Tammy Tirolo (Delusional Influrencer on here) provides guidance on this. Her work is what has cracked open my own healing journey. It really does go down to the cellular level, to our nervous system. I've been saying this lately & am convinced it's a key to progress.
