It's not just Hollywood it's also in gaming. I think one of the best examples I can think of that's subtle but completely re-writes a character is Leon from how he was in RE4 to his remake version. His remake version is like someone took a burdizzo to him and made him nothing more than walking teenage angst, all he does is deliver marvel level dialogue in gameplay then when the big bad is on screen it's like he's terrified. They also completely removed anything he said towards women or any dialogue that made him more than an edge lord goody two shoes. This flattening of a character into some that fits within the "PC" framework is the same thing they have done for the last 10 years and will continue to do. Hell every new star wars movie was literally the same exact trope, "tired old white man is sick of doing stuff until spunky female lead shows up and gets them to perk up again, while they are made to be completely incompetent in the process then subsequently die!"
