Wormwood is not in my toolbox because a correspondence list told me “wormwood = psychic powers.” I want to know why a plant makes sense for the job I’m giving it. Wormwood is famously, aggressively bitter. That bitterness is part of the plant’s chemistry and defense, and it has also accumulated a long history of association with divination, spirits, protection, dreams, and hidden things. So I work with that personality. Wormwood gets brought out when I think my own feelings, assumptions, or hopes might be getting in the way of what I’m actually looking at. For tarot, I can anoint the outside of my deck box or the edge of my reading cloth with a tiny amount of tincture and ask: “Show me what I’m refusing to see.” Then I pull one card: What am I missing? You don’t need the tincture specifically. You could develop your own relationship with dried wormwood, an infused preparation, or another form of the plant you already have access to. And you don’t need wormwood at all. The point of the Herbal Toolbox is learning WHY we choose a plant so you can stop feeling like witchcraft requires memorizing somebody else’s ingredient list. Know the plant. Build the relationship. Then give her a job that actually makes sense. SAFETY NOTE Wormwood is not an herb I recommend casually ingesting just because you own a tincture. Follow the product directions and relevant medical guidance. For this practice, the tincture stays external and goes on the box or cloth, not your skin or cards. #wormwood #herbs #witchcraft #occult #witch
