The hyperfocus conversation needs way more nuance than just your brain latches onto random sh1t. What’s happening for many here is about salience regulation and stimulation thresholds.
When you’re locked into ple4sure during s//gs, it’s because the experience is sufficiently salient (emotionally, physically, relationally) to stabilize your attention. Your brain tags this moment as important and worth staying the f*ck in. But attention in ADHD is highly sensitive to shifts in salience. If stimulation drops, novelty fades, or a competing thought becomes more emotionally charged, your brain reallocates attention. This is because something else just became more neurologically relevant. That’s when your brain can grab the ceiling stain, the intrusive thought or the performance anxiety.
It’s not random. it’s the ADHD attentional system doing what it’s wired to do in many which is shifting toward whatever carries the strongest signal. The threshold for what counts as strong enough stimulation varies. One session you’re fully locked in and another time, the exact same situation doesn’t hold your attention. That variability can feel confusing as hell in intim4cy.
🚨(There’s SO much more nuance here around trauma, anxiety, body image, and how ADHD can lower the barrier for attentional shifting. I broke all of this down in my Substack that goes live at 9am where you can get the full layers of education on this.)
As always, this isn’t universal. If this pattern is creating distress, work with someone who understands ADHD and intimacy. Your attention shifting mid intim4cy can be a nervous system pattern that can be understood and navigated. ❤️ #adhd #hyperfocus #relationships
