I would not be surprised if a regular residential interior acrylic paint was used, as opposed to the specialty coating required. Also, it would have taken far more paint than typically required for a given surface, since the color is so saturated. Dark colors require a base with less TiO2 (the white part of paint), requiring more coats to cover a surface to the proper thickness and opacity.
