@betty.elizahh: Your council house might be the beginning of your wealth journey. I say this with everything in me. There is a UK government scheme called Right to Buy. It allows council tenants to purchase their home at a significant discount. Most people living in council properties have no idea how powerful this is. Here is where it stands right now. ➡ The rules changed in November 2024. The minimum time you must have lived in public sector housing before you can apply has increased from 3 years to 10 years. ➡ The maximum discount was also reduced in November 2024 back to pre-2012 levels, now ranging from £16,000 to £38,000 depending on your region. ➡ Your discount starts at 35% for a house after 3 years of tenancy. For a flat it can go up to 70% off the market value. ➡ You can make a joint application with anyone who shares your tenancy, or include up to three family members who have lived with you for at least 12 months. ➡ The discount replaces your deposit. The years you have already paid rent count toward what you owe. You will need a good credit score, solicitor fees, and the decision to move. Yes the window is smaller than it used to be. But this is still one of the most powerful wealth building opportunities available to working class people in this country. This is your foot on the property ladder. This is something your children can inherit. This is the beginning of building real wealth. If you have been living in a council property for more than 3 years, go to gov.uk and search Right to Buy today. Read everything. Check your eligibility. Do not leave this on the table. You might be sitting on a gold mine and not even know it. Save this. Share it with someone who needs to see it.

I’d love to buy mine as the mortgage would be less than the rent but unfortunately I’m waiting for my Iva to come off my credit report

I applied to the RTB last year and the mortgage would be £950 a month and my current rent is £440 a month including my water rates, so sad that I cannot afford to buy it and I’ve been here for 22 years

Having a Council house could be the beginning of a wealth journey but it would be much smarter to buy an additional property to let out while remaining a Council tenant this still then allows you onto the property ladder and leave your children something to inherit but on top of that you have an additional income which gives you wealth

Guys it usually 30 to 40% off you get to buy your council property the 30 40% is what you use to put down your deposit. Disclaimer if you live in a council flat not house don’t even bother as you will be paying more for the service charge then the mortgage.

You can still buy after 3 years so not sure how 10 years is relevant.
