@metatouch: Lay down and notice one foot pointing way out or way in? Most people think it’s just how they’re built, but it can actually be a sign of muscle imbalance and fascial restriction. When the glutes aren’t firing properly, they can’t stabilize the hip and leg. At the same time, tight fascia can literally pull the entire chain into a rotated position. Here’s a simple way to address it: Pull your leg slightly in the direction it’s already turning. Then try to rotate your leg against that restriction and hold the contraction for 60 to 90 seconds. As you maintain the pressure, the fascia begins to unwind and the nervous system starts allowing the muscles to relax. This can help improve alignment throughout the entire kinetic chain and may reduce stress on the foot, ankle, knee, hip, and even the lower back. Watch what happens when you release. Often the foot immediately sits in a more neutral position. This is misleading. Most commonly this is a normal resting/relaxed position for the hips when supine. Everyone’s bone/joint is different. Some have more internal rotation and others have more external. There are always exceptions, like most situations. If it’s not painful and there’s no nerve related sensations happening, it’s fine to lie down this way. Relax everyone.
