I looked it up and found this: “The "Self-Destruction" Quote: At the end of the novel, Marianne expresses remorse for the reckless state of her health, stating, "My illness... had been entirely brought on by myself, by such negligence of my own health, as I had felt even at the time to be wrong". She later adds, "Had I died, it would have been self-destruction". Scholars often compare these lines to contemporary 18th-century literary treatments of abortion or secret pregnancies.”

Ohhh do you think that’s why Willoughby comes to apologise and explain his circumstances to Elinor when Marriane’s ill? And why he has so much guilt at the end of the novel? 👀

Where is your evidence though? What you’ve mentioned isn’t really evidence.

I don’t know how to reply with a video, but there is some weight to your theory. However, it is a more recent reading of the text. Rachel Feder of the university of Denver (of course I went looking for papers) has done a collaborative essay called ‘miscarrying the marriage plot’ on said topic.

Even if it’s not true, people would think it’s true. And I think that’s also why she ended up with Brandon because she had tarnished her reputation with Willoughby.
