Most people think excessive apologizing is about being polite. But for many people with OCD, the apology isn’t really the point. OCD can create intense doubt: “What if I upset them?” “What if they’re still mad?” “What if I didn’t apologize the right way?” “What if they only said it’s okay to be nice?” So they apologize again. And again. And again. Not because they don’t care what the other person said, but because OCD keeps demanding certainty. The problem is that certainty never lasts. The relief from an apology fades quickly, and OCD comes back asking for more reassurance, more apologies, and more confirmation that everything is okay. If you recognize this pattern, try not to focus on getting the “perfect” apology. Instead, focus on resisting the urge to seek reassurance after you’ve already apologized. That’s where recovery begins. If you’re raising a child, teen, or young adult with OCD and want practical tools, support, and education delivered straight to your inbox, join my newsletter at www.natashadaniels.com/newsletter #ocd #ocdproblems #ocdrecovery #ocdawareness #childocd
