@getlostintheusa: Nobody warned me there was a place like this near Chicago. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett is built from hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone, and the amount of detail is incredible in person. One thing to know before you go: photography isn’t allowed inside the mandir itself. At first I was disappointed, but it actually made me pay more attention to the space instead of looking at it through my phone. They also offer free guided tours (reserve ahead), which explain the architecture, traditions, and symbolism throughout the complex.
