work-life balance is not a lie. It is probably not possible to be CEO of a large company making millions of dollars a year and have work-life balance. However, it is absolutely possible for most employees in most jobs. It isn't always easy, but you put time and energy into what is most important to you. If work is most important because you want to be CEO - fine. Others will never be a rich CEO, but they will see their children every day and raise them. You get to decide what is important to you. Don't let anyone else decide for you.

So don’t work? Or don’t do life? This video made me even more confused. She just smiled and said she quit and now is the CEO of TIAA. Make the math math please

I work for a privately owned dealership of one of the largest employers in its industry. My boss is quick to tell new hires we believe in life work balance. Then they get angry when they get pushed back because they announce that their sales team is going to have to go from working 8 to 10 hour days to 12 to 14 hour days because of a change and when they are going to book their in-home sales appointments from 11 two and five slots, 210 two and six slots where their appointments run an hour and a half plus long and there may be a 3 Hour Dr. to get to that appointment and back home. The CEO of our company that reports to corporate that is a holy own subsidiary of this large employer in the industry actually said how insulted he was because he worked long hours when his kids were young, to raise the new demands on their shrinking personal time was unprofessional. And he wonders why it’s no longer a “family“ environment when there was 20% of our current numbers of staff? He posts about second home in $10,000 watches and his examples are un relatable about buying luxury vehicle that his wife demanded on the birth of their first child., meanwhile thinking the wages he paid because it’s more than what he earned 20 years ago doing the same thing is enough money to prevent any complaints. Without any consideration of cost-of-living and what the value of that dollar actually purchases today. How utterly out of touch and what a lie work life balance truly is.

I've eliminated that term from my workplace. Sometimes work takes precedence, sometimes life takes precedence.

Easy for a CEO to say that when you're in control of people's livelihood.

It used to be possible. The reason it isn’t now is because companies are unreasonable in their expectations.

It’s not a balance, it’s more like 70% work, 30% live your life. But that 30% is still enjoyable if you do it right.

I don't think that's how she means this but work life balance is a lie for me because even the fact that I have to have a full time job to survive is like a black cloud that follows me everywhere. It's just stolen any ability to feel joy from me over time. And it's not even a particularly bad job.

This is why I never understood the work life balance idea. I get it, but the job I have is one of those where it’s like “lol what life? Work is life”
