I completely disagree, once you pay upfront, you have lost all leverage. You’ve just taken away the reason for them to do their job. The incentive is gone.

I was at a roof top bar in Vegas and the night was young. I knew the place would be packed later. I bought four drinks that cost $10 each and gave him a $100 cash. He reached out to give me my cash back and told him to keep it, you earned it Boss! I went up to the bar later that night it the place was packed. Probably about five people deep and short staffed just like he said they would be. I walked up and he noticed me in the crowd. He looked right at me and asked me if I wanted the usual. I said yes. I was in and out and back to my table with my guest. People all around thought I was famous as I juts walked up and he took care of me instantly. Tip first and Tip Big. They will take amazing care of you and remember you.

I tried your method I tipped the waiter first and 4 minutes later a new waiter came over saying our old waiter shift ended and he was our new waiter so we tipped twice

in my clubbing day, I used to go early and talked to the bartender, ask their name, and tip them extra. he/she would remember my name and order. I never had to wait/fight my way when it was crowded. People around me thought I was famous 😁
