@itssophieblank: if you’re still listening to your parents and follow the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, it’s time to change. This how you need to adapt in a world of increasing prices, the average house price being 12x average earnings and disruption through AI. The old rule: 1. 50% - Needs: Essential living expenses, such as your rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries and basic household items, transportation 2. 30% - Wants: Things you enjoy but could live without, e.g. shopping, eating out, subscriptions, travel, beauty treatments 3. 20% - Savings & Debt: Debt payoff, Student loans, savings In today’s world, this won’t get you a house, a holiday or a life you enjoy. Especially when it comes to savings & debt - of course it’s important to pay off debt, to save for an emergency fund, but what really builds wealth is investing in the long-term. That’s what took me from -£33,000 in debt after I left university (a rough awakening to the joys of student loans) to more than £210,000 in 2026. And hopefully £250,000 by the end of the year. Another things I always neglected was investing in myself. But I now know that to make money, you need to invest and spend money. Not for instant gratification or shopping, but to build a business, increase your salary or learn about AI. That’s why the new budgeting rule should be: 1. 50% - Living expenses: The lower this percentage the better but I think for most of us, it’ll be somewhere around 50%. 2. 20% - Desires: Beauty treatments, good quality clothing, travel 3. 20% - Investing: I like boring ETFs that do the work for me. My fave is VWRP (Vanguard FTSE All World ETF) and I invest via Trading212. Comment 212 and I’ll send you a code to get a fractional share worth £100 when signing up (Terms & Conditions apply). 4. 10% - Growth: This is investing in yourself. Whether that’s taking people out for dinner to learn from them and network or buying tokens to play around with AI. As always, this is not financial advice. I’m just an audacious girl working towards £1m in net worth, sharing what worked for me.
