Countries that called themselves “communist” were at best in the socialist stage. They use the label aspirationally, but have never reached the goal(communism). So judging the idea of communism based on other countries attempts is like judging a cake by the unbaked batter. Meanwhile capitalism is just raw ingredients people exploit for wealth.

I like that young people are having these conversations. We should be able to have them. That being said, saying capitalism is bad is just as dumb as saying communism is bad or socialism is bad. They are systems that can be evaluated on their merits. You cannot argue that capitalism hasn’t had extremely great outcomes for billions of people. At the same time, unchecked capitalism has had terrible effects on those who fall through the cracks. IMO, you need a blend of socialism and capitalism. But the people have to be willing to share some of their successes with those that fare poorly or the system falls apart.

My other issue with this conversation is that people always criticize communism by citing examples of communism that were authoritarian, as if it isn’t possible that the issue with these societies was the form of government instead of the economic ideology.

this is why I'm so intrigued to see what Mamdani does in New York during his term as Mayor. I've been a big fan of his progress in the time he has been mayor. If we can watch that man succeed in real time, in an economic crisis, with one of the biggest cities in the country, that proves that in full scale socialism can and DOES work. Not on paper, but in practice.
