Running, cycling, and swimming involve repetitive, bilateral patterns that can bring up memories or emotions, which is why they are sometimes compared to EMDR. EMDR itself is a structured psychotherapy with strong evidence for trauma treatment, and exercise alone is not a substitute. These experiences can be a signal that unresolved stress is surfacing, and that structured mental health care may be helpful.
