He spent nearly 13 years working inside the CIA during the height of the Cold War and participated in operations linked to Vietnam, Congo and Angola. Stockwell initially believed he was serving democracy and American national interests, but his experiences inside covert operations gradually changed his views. After supervising CIA activities in Angola during the mid-1970s, he became deeply critical of the agency’s methods and secrecy. He accused the CIA of manipulating foreign conflicts, spreading propaganda and supporting destructive proxy wars across the developing world. In 1977, he resigned from the agency and later wrote the book “In Search of Enemies,” exposing details about covert operations.
