This book thrived off of public discourse and the state of the targeted audience’s self-morality, not because it was a good story. It was cleverly written but thats what you have to do when you don’t know enough about what you’re writing.

YES THAT INTRO LIKE IT WAS WRITTEN THROUGH SNARK. And 100% the throw away comments detailing the narrative and very inconsistent. It does feel like just dropping every thought she has.

i really enjoyed the book and felt like her contradictions were intentional. it’s the thing of like when you’re agreeing with someone and agreeing with someone about the weather and then they’re say chemtrails or space lasers when you were gonna say like climate change, ya know? they don’t think about the thing so much that they notice the contradictions but they still experience The World

100% agree, I don’t disagree w the authors that influencers have to buy what they’re selling and I’m glad I read it bc it was a fun read , but I’m confused on what the takeaway was … I think this story was for us to gain satisfaction at the fact Natalie got punished appropriately and didn’t acknowledge if Natalie understood that

Completely agree about it reading like a Reddit snark page. It was too obvious and too on the nose. Like you said, if no one had thought about the contradictions of tradwife influencers before, it might feel new or interesting but it really just rehashed existing online discourse and didn’t really add anything. I also felt the writing was pretty poor and found it distracting.

I think the fact she hates her husband but can’t fathom why her sister would leave a marriage made sense to me because Natalie was so deeply obsessed with how she was perceived (both by her family, by her traditional Christian community, and strangers online). Ultimately her fear of how she may negatively be perceived overruled every other aspect of her life, including her personal happiness, goals, and health and wellbeing (as well as the health and wellbeing of her children, most obviously)

It wasn’t satire, everything was spelled out for us on a silver platter. The book thinks we’re stupid. And unfortunately, based on the reviews I’ve seen, she was right.

I agree & I think Burke had to write it in first person bc she couldn’t figure out how to tell a story third person, but then you can’t drop in your evolved “feminist” thinking into a character that is supposed to not be thinking any of that (esp when she’s younger). I also thought it was WEIRD how much Burke clearly hated Natalie lol, like you wrote this character why are you so nasty about her

As soon as I finished the book, I was like this isn't the feminist near horror discourse about tradwives and influencer culture I was promised. The author just really hates ballerina farms and apparently had a novel worth of things to say about it. In a lot of ways it felt like a low blow because Burke doesn't even seem to try to understand how someone ends up as a tradwife. I couldn't even hate natalie because she had no real personality, and I love when I hate a main character. But all of Yesteryear was just ... not what I wanted? And to be fair I read it super fast because I'm a nosey reader and needed to know where the story was going to end, but every single twist felt like a pointed accusation at ballerina farms without any sustenance or believability.
