@meghannmcuniff: A woman whose cousin was murdered by a serial killer in New York remembered her as “fierce, kind, compassionate, beautiful and intelligent” at a sentencing hearing on Wednesday. “Do you want to end up like Jessica? That is a question I heard many times as a teenager. Something spoken out of the fear of knowing what a monster is truly capable of. The answer was yes. I did want to end up like Jess,” Jasmine Robinson said before a judge sentenced Rex Heuermann to life in prison without parole. Robinson said her cousin Jessica Taylor “loved every person she met better than she found them, even if they only met for a moment.” “She never met a stranger. She was pure sunshine. If I could say something to her murderer, I would say this: You thought you took her voice, but you didn't know that she had people who loved her. You hunted her, and I hunted you,” she continued. Heuermann, 62, pleaded guilty on April 8 to three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of second-degree murder for Taylor’s murder and the murders of six other women. He admitted in his allocution to murdering an eighth woman. Judge Timothy Mazzei sentenced him on Wednesday (June 7) in Suffolk County Supreme Court on Long Island. Heuermann founded an architecture firm in Manhattan and lived on Long Island. He was arrested outside his office July 13, 2023, after DNA from a discarded pizza crust linked him to the murders. He murdered the women between 1993 and 2010. Police realized a serial killer was on the loose after they found human remains on and near Gilgo Beach on Long Island in 2010 and 2011. Taylor was 20 worked as a prostitute when she disappeared from Manhattan on July 21, 2003. Some of her remains were found five days later in Manorville, about 45 miles east of Gilgo Beach. More remains were found in March 2011. Robinson referenced a document that Huernamn wrote about how to conceal the murder, including a supply list and a list of problems such as DNA. "Remove ID marks? Well, we know you couldn't do that because she was identified by the tattoo that you couldn't cut out properly," Robinson said. She also questioned why the FBI would want to talk to Heuermann. "You're boring. You're not prolific. You couldn't even be top five. You're a nobody," Taylor said. #law #court #crime
