Swimming with Endangered wild pink dolphins!!! 🤯😍🐬 Called ‘Botos’ in Portuguese, they are Amazon River dolphins and this was in the Rio Negro (Black River) near Manaus. Pink dolphin calves are born a standard dark slate gray. As they grow into adolescence, they slowly lose their gray pigmentation and fade into a lighter pinkish-gray pattern. The pink dolphins have very thin, semi-transparent skin. A dense network of blood vessels sits right beneath the surface. When they get excited, active, or warm, they essentially "blush" a bright pink. Other factors affect how pink they get too such as healing battle scars of males, as they frequently fight over territory and mates, and thus are significantly pinker than females. They look so strange and creepy looking, especially the long, protruding front part of the dolphin (called the rostrum/beak/snout), but they were so friendly with us.
