He has no clear memory of how he got there, only flashes of fear, violence, and strange experiments. The facility is in chaos after a storm damages security systems, allowing Daniel and another inmate named Leo Kasper to escape. Leo appears confident, aggressive, and highly skilled at survival, guiding Daniel through the city while urging him to fight anyone who stands in their way. As they move through dark streets, abandoned buildings, and dangerous neighborhoods, Daniel slowly begins remembering pieces of his past. Years earlier, he worked as a scientist for the Pickman Project, an illegal government experiment designed to create perfect assassins through psychological conditioning and mind control. The project used torture, drugs, and mental manipulation to erase fear and morality from human subjects. Daniel originally joined the project believing it would help create methods to control violent behavior, but he eventually realized the organization’s true purpose was far more sinister. During his escape, Daniel becomes hunted by “The Project,” a secret organization determined to silence him before the truth becomes public. Mercenaries, corrupt police officers, and armed agents are sent after him across the city. Leo constantly pushes Daniel to survive through brutality, often showing little emotion or mercy. Although Daniel feels disturbed by the violence around him, he depends on Leo’s guidance because he cannot survive alone. As the story continues, Daniel reunites with his wife, who believed he had died years earlier. She reveals that Daniel disappeared after attempting to expose the Pickman Project and destroy its research. Daniel then discovers a horrifying truth about Leo. Leo Kasper was not a real companion at all. He was a personality created inside Daniel’s fractured mind during the experiments. Years before the events of the game, Daniel killed the real Leo during a desperate escape attempt, but the trauma and conditioning caused Leo’s personality to remain alive inside his head. The experiments had split Daniel’s identity into two sides. Daniel represented guilt, fear, and humanity, while Leo represented violence, survival instincts, and rage. Throughout the game, Leo’s influence grows stronger, trying to fully take control of Daniel’s mind and body. Many of the brutal actions committed during the escape were fueled by Leo manipulating Daniel into becoming the perfect killer the Project wanted. Eventually, Daniel reaches the leaders of the Pickman Project and learns they planned to use him as proof that their conditioning program worked. They believed a divided personality could create an unstoppable assassin capable of following orders without hesitation. Daniel refuses to become their weapon and fights back against the organization responsible for destroying his life. The final confrontation takes place inside Daniel’s mind as he battles Leo for control. Leo argues that violence is the only way to survive and that Daniel is too weak to live without him.
