Rev. Kusi Berko (also known by his birth name, Kusi Brempong). Kusi Berko was highly influential in the "indigenous gospel" movement in Ghana. He was uniquely known for playing the accordion—which became his signature performance instrument. His music frequently blended deep traditional Ghanaian rhythms with powerful, soul-stirring vocal harmonies.Hit Songs: Throughout his career, he released several beloved church anthems that remain popular across the country. His most notable hit songs included "Ofata/Nyame Aguama", "Edin Ben Ni", and "Mrane".Life Struggles: In the late 2000s, Rev. Berko suffered a debilitating stroke that left him bedridden and unable to walk for approximately six years. Despite these immense health challenges, his faith remained steadfast, and he made surprise public appearances in the early 2010s to thank God for his life.Passing: After battling stroke, diabetes, and pneumonia, he passed away at the St. Michael Hospital at Pramso, near Kumasi, on August 1, 2014. He was 56 years old.Legacy: His funeral in November 2014 was a massive national tribute attended by the clergy, fans, and major Ghanaian music stars like the Tagoe Sisters. He was famously laid to rest in a coffin designed in the shape of his beloved accordion.
