As a recent convert, wasn’t informed of either. My husband is cradle and didn’t know there was penance on Friday. I’d seen video on TikTok about early church not eating meat on Fridays (not that it was a required penance). I talked my family into following this without knowing the why. Now I have the why. Thank you.

I give up meat every Wednesday and Friday's.. During lent I give up all meats anything that comes from animal and all sweets .. black coffee . I give it all up cause I honour My Lord Jesus Christ especially what He went through for our sins ..

My priest told me the opposite, at least in America. It’s not a sin anymore. Very good to keep in practice anyways but it matters if we’re correct

I heard this a couple years ago so now every Friday I don’t eat until 12pm and I don’t eat meat. I’ve been doing it for more than 2 years.

The Orthodox are also strict on the penance on Friday... Friday is the day when Jesus was crucified and it is not a day for indulgence and pleasing the flesh. We pray the Sorrowful Misteries on Friday for a reason
