@itsmaggieperkins: As a PhD student with ADHD, I need to proactively accommodate my neurodivergence. One thing I do is request the reading and materials list in advance. I use this to set myself up for success with the links and the PDFs. Additionally, once I get that list, I go ahead and set up all of my citations in the various formats that I will need them for. This creates a citation menu for me to use throughout the semester. #adhd #audhd #neurodivergent #phdstudent #gradschoollife

I’m late diagnosed adhd, and I honestly can’t believe I was able to get a master’s degree because I don’t auditory process information well or quickly.

As the professor with ADHD, I definitely wouldn't have that list of readings ready before two weeks before class

Omg that citation menu! I wish I had thought to do that during grad school when writing my thesis. It would’ve totally helped my neuro-divergence.

“You might also need some accomodations” 🤣 The amount of professors who are walking around undiagnosed is wild. 🤣

I was diagnosed half way through my PhD classes. I wish I would have organized my citations better. I found a system that works now, but it's requiring me to go back and update and fix all of my citations I have used so far.

Classes weren’t the issue for me in grad school, it’s the independent research and thesis work. I’ve been done classes for 3 semesters and am just dead in the water because I can’t finish my research and writing.

The damn citations thing is what made me wait almost 3 years after finishing my coursework to submit my thesis! If I had done this it would have removed the biggest barriers to my completion. It was such a mental block for me. Thanks for sharing these tips!

Bruh what I tried to do this (I’m in undergrad) and was told “professors usually don’t have them ready until the first day of class” 😐

i print out and plan out EVERYTHING before the class starts - binder is made with readings, textbook is marked for required reading, assignment rubrics printed, everything broken down by weeks, and task checklists printed and hung up

I had a professor last semester say AND I QUOTE “if you need accommodations you don’t belong on my program” sir I have a masters degree in engineering. The accommodation I was asking for was written assignment instructions he only would give them verbally. Anyway I’m all but dissertation now :)

I was diagnosed after obtaining my doctorate. My ADHD thrived in that environment: it was perfectly structured, intense, challenging, and in an area of special interest. I struggled most post-grad bc I lost the structure and all of the other fun dopamine boosts maintaining my motivation. 😩

As also a university level teacher, the two week thing is a stretch. There have been many times I haven’t even been told what/when I’m teaching until a few days before classes begin! Once it was a brand new class I had never taught and I had 4 days to put together a syllabus. But I do do my best to provide accommodations for my students whether or not they have paperwork through disability services. Students 100% deserve needed accommodations but give profs a little grace too! Admin is chaotic lol

I know this is nothing compared to a PhD but I’m graduating as a double major(psych and journalism) with a 3.93 gpa and just finished my final class! Task initiation was the worst but medication and tools set in place helped so much. I don’t think I would have followed through with my degrees without the help of my friends and therapist.

I dropped out of grad school because it was online and weekly work would be locked until Monday morning at 8 am. Things would be due Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I was teaching all day and then expected to do two hours of homework every night. I was mentally burnt out and in physical pain (I was teaching behavior special education) before I even left my job. I just wanted to go to sleep. Professors were unwilling to leave weeks unlocked so I could work ahead and if I waited to the weekend, my work was late. When I asked the disability office for help and they asked me to identify what accommodations I needed and I didn’t know because I was diagnosed as an adult with ADHD. I wish I had seen this then.

Advance access is so important. I need a week notice to order a paper textbook. Those take time to source. I can’t read e-texts
