@drsarahhensley: If your co-parent is high conflict, constantly escalates, ignores boundaries, or turns every interaction into a battle, trying harder to "co-parent better" may actually be making things worse. At some point, protecting your child's nervous system becomes more important than maintaining the fantasy that you'll eventually become a perfectly cooperative parenting team. That's where parallel parenting comes in. Less conflict. Less chaos. Less exposure to adult dysfunction. Because children don't need parents who agree on everything. They need parents who can provide stability, predictability, and emotional safety. Not every co-parenting situation needs parallel parenting. But if you're dealing with a high-conflict ex, it may be one of the healthiest decisions you can make for both you and your child. Have you experienced co-parenting or parallel parenting?
