Because we drive on one side of the road if we were in the middle, it would cause a lack of depth perception and make it much harder to see on each side of your vehicle hence why we have mirrors for changing lanes turning etc. It’s much more complicated than that but basic breakdown for people who genuinely don’t understand.

Passenger seating, blocks parts like the transmission and engine shafts, and the steering shaft would be blocked by the engine if it’s in the front and solving these problems would make the car more expensive and reaching out your windows and getting out of the car is more annoying and also seeing incoming traffic is harder
