@yahoonews: A 1,200-year-old oak tree in England's Sherwood Forest, believed by some to have sheltered the mythical character Robin Hood, has died. The cause? One conservation group believes that an influx of visitors over two centuries may have compressed the soil and made it difficult for rain to reach its roots. #news #sherwoodforest #robinhood
They’re going to preserve it where it stands and have no intentions of cutting it down. Unknown estimate of how long it can last, but ranges between decades to several hundred years have been spoken about.

If the tree was that GD important, why wouldn’t somebody irrigate the tree and the soil?

Mikel Owen :
I would think it had to do with the amount of nutrients and minerals the tree was able to pull from the ground as well as compressed soil. A tree that old has got to has massive roots.

makes sense the oldest tree is removed from mais and protected to make sure the ground won't compress.
