@threadofeverything: We picture the Samaritan woman of John 4 as a serial adulteress: five husbands, and the man she has now is not her husband (John 4:18). But in that world a woman could not divorce a man, only the husband could (Meier, Keener). So five husbands far more likely means five men discarded HER, widowed, divorced, passed along, used up. She is not the villain. She is the most rejected woman in the region, drawing water alone at noon to avoid the eyes of the others. And Jesus, a Jewish man who by every rule should not even speak to her, crosses three walls to sit at that well and ask her for a drink. He names her whole history without one word of rebuke and offers her living water. And before He tells anyone else alive, He tells her: I am he, the Messiah (John 4:26). The most shamed woman becomes the first preacher: she drops her water jar and runs to the town that whispered about her (4:29), and the town believes. This is the whole pattern of the Bible. God goes to the discarded, Hagar, Leah, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and runs the bloodline of His own Son straight through them (Matthew 1). And then He goes further than that: He becomes discarded Himself (Isaiah 53). If you have been divorced, left, looked through: He knew the whole thing before He sat down, and He came anyway.
