birth control, particularly continuous pill use, had completely changed so much for me. i used to bleed so much it was likely causing anemia. now, i only have a period if i decide to

My first experience with the pill— I cried all the time and lost weight. The doctor asked if I was trying to lose weight— I burst into tears. He said— you may need a lower dose.

The weight gain isn’t a thing in the past though. It can make people gain weight or not, totally depends on what the hormones are doing to the individual. Sex hormones have a huge impact on metabolism, thyroid hormone availability, insulin, glycogen stores. so changing them, increasing or decreasing them, blocking them, etc…can impact weight in several ways. I’m not sure how one can say that it’s a myth given all the data there is on hormone and metabolism relationship.

Teens who have to go to their doctor regularly to get a BC script are more likely to bring up depression symptoms with that doctor. I presume anyway

Ahhh cool! The depression link sounds so similar to how Accutane was linked to depression, but of course a significant percentage of people on Accutane are teenagers who are already likely to show depression symptoms

The most fascinating thing when I was on BC, was that different progestins are what make the biggest difference in tolerability.

I mean on the STI thing I’m sure not using BC puts you at a higher risk for pregnancy that using would put you for STIs. Plus most STIs are easier to treat than pregnancy

RD here - BC can change digestion and that can impede B vitamin absorption. If the BC reduces period intensity/length it can make iron deficiency less likely because less blood is lost

The combination pill is a blessing for me who has adhd and suffered with severe pms. I was useless for 1-2 weeks a month (numb to depressed, far less tolerance for stress etc). Now with stable levels of estrogen and progesterone throughout the month, my mood also remain stable, and my meds have a reliable effect as well. Bonus: higher sex drive.
