My husband’s original dream as a young rider was 3 day. A neighbor introduced him to jumping after outrunning him and his pony on a backroad one afternoon. There wasn’t any path for him because of finances. He was pure raw talent, which he proved by going to the only equine sport that doesn’t care how broke a rider is. He had a multi decade career as a jockey including a Grade 1 win in Japan, which very few international riders have ever done. He is magic on a horse. Money is a massive barrier and anyone who pretends it hasn’t cost the sport real talent is either trolling or living in denial.

Look... I am making a self made horse and while he is nice I have had to sink an amazing amount of money to get to 4th/PSG and I'm not even competitive against others. Just hoping to clock 60s for my medals

I was incredibly talented as a teenager and young adult and simply had zero dollars to do any shows. I’ve ridden some incredible horses, but could never have afforded to purchase them. And there are times I do think. “what if“. I don’t stress about it anymore, but I do have very fond memories of the Horses that I trained. It is so sad that so many talented people get priced out out of this sport.

And they act like saying that means we are talking about 1.40 jumpers. Even a safe 2'6" horse with changes is like mid/upper 5 figures. Most normal people don't have 50-90k to spend on an animal.
