#kourtneykardashian just announced she is pregnant at 44 - after multiple rounds of #failedivfcycle. We don’t know how- but either they resumed treatment and were ultimately successful - either with her 44 year old eggs (from retrievals done now), from eggs frozen when she was younger (?maybe she had more than just the 7 we know about), from her younger sister’s eggs, or from eggs retrieved from a younger unrelated donor…etc. There are MANY possibilities. It IS also possible that they truly quit IVF and randomly happen to conceive unassisted during an ovulation cycle. I HAVE had patients conceive on their own after quitting treatment or taking a pause after a failed cycle. As annoying as it can be to hear this if you are currently going through fertility issues, all it does take is one healthy egg to meet one sperm. If I have a patient who has not been successful with IVF and they no longer want to or cannot pursue more attempts, I will always speak to them about optimizing continuing to try on their own versus reverting to more “laid back” treatment options such as medicated IUI. Donor egg IVF is another great treatment approach which can be very effective in overcoming the common reasons why IVF typically fails (low egg count and/or egg quality issues)- but sometimes patients will take some time to try timed intercourse versus medicated IUI before moving onto using donor egg. It is important to know that it is still possible to conceive after failed IVF but that you should balance this possibility and the hope it brings with realism based on the age associated probability and also factoring in your personal timeline and overall family building goals.
