I was a “trad wife.” I have been divorced for 20 years. We had 6 kids. My child support was 2500 a month 20 years ago. I used grants, scholarships, and loans to finish a bachelor’s degree in physics and a second one in math. I added a master’s in sustainable food systems and I am finishing a PhD in Sustainability. I did all this while representing myself in court. He was VERY litigious. I had full legal custody and made all decisions for the kids. I was able to establish residency for the kids anywhere in the world and the lowest my child support ever got was 1650 a month. I have never remarried and will get half of his retirement and social security. It was not easy, but you can absolutely fight back and build a life after divorce. I have fought poverty my entire life because of the mindset corporate America has towards SAHMs. I have had an amazing career in education and nonprofits, participated in think tanks, and used my diverse skills to build programs all over this country. Yes, I could have had more money and it has been financially difficult, but life is hard. Misogyny in the full time paid workforce makes it harder.

I also want to point out that all this could happen if your partner suddenly dies too, not just divorce. Yeah, if you have life insurance, that can help for a little while, but that process also takes time and money doesn’t last forever, especially if you don’t have consistent income to supplement.
