@wealthythumbprint: Lidice Memorial The Lidice Memorial is one of the most moving monuments in the world. It honours the 82 children from the village of Lidice in what is now the Czech Republic, who were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War after the village was destroyed in 1942. The life-sized bronze children stand together on a hillside, gazing toward the site of their former village. Their expressions capture fear, uncertainty, and innocence, creating a powerful reminder of the human cost of war. The memorial was created not only to remember the children of Lidice but also to represent all children who have suffered in conflicts around the world. Lidice Memorial +1 The artist behind this remarkable work was Marie Uchytilová, a Czech sculptor deeply affected by the tragedy of Lidice. In 1969, she began the ambitious task of creating 82 larger-than-life statues, one for each child who lost their life. The project became her life's work and took nearly two decades of dedication. Thousands of visitors came to her studio as the sculptures took shape, and many were so moved that they donated money to help bring the memorial to life. Lidice Memorial +2 Sadly, Marie Uchytilová died in 1989 before seeing her masterpiece completed. Determined to fulfill her vision, her husband, Jiří V. Hampl, continued the work and oversaw the bronze casting of the figures. The first statues were installed in Lidice in 1995, and the full memorial was completed in 2000. Today, the children stand together in silent remembrance, serving as a powerful symbol of peace, resilience, and the importance of ensuring that such tragedies are never forgotten. Lidice Memorial +2 per AI #lidice #innocentchildren #victims #worldwar2 #sadnessandsorrow s
