I think it's because when you have wavy or curly hair, depending on how wavy or curly your hair is it'll appear darker due to there being a lot of shadows and parts where your hair coils or waves that the sun or light can't get to which makes your hair appear darker than it actually is. Straightening your hair means that the sun and light can reach more parts or your hair making it look lighter!!
