Most managers think their job stops with their team. It doesn’t. In my experience, that’s only half the role. The other half? Managing up. And this is where most managers fall short. Not because they’re bad at their job — but because they ignore the one relationship that controls their visibility, resources, and progression. They focus down. They forget up. Then wonder why they’re overlooked. Let me be clear… managing up isn’t politics. It’s awareness. It’s understanding what your leader actually cares about — not what you think they should care about. It’s making their job easier, not adding to their workload. Here’s what that looks like in the real world: You don’t wait to be asked for updates — you give them early. You don’t bring problems — you bring options. You don’t guess priorities — you align to them. Simple. But rarely done consistently. I’ve seen talented managers stall their careers because they kept their head down and “just did the work.” That’s not enough. Because your leader isn’t judging effort. They’re judging impact — and how easy you are to work with. Get this right and everything changes: You get more autonomy — because you’ve earned trust. You get more backing — because you’ve shown value. You get more opportunities — because you’re visible for the right reasons. And it starts with one simple move: Ask your leader: “What do you most need from me right now?” Then build everything around that answer. That’s managing up. Not being liked — being trusted. SAVE and REPOST this. #leadership #management #careergrowth #managers
