He carved out a six year career as a journeyman cornerback and special teams player. During his rookie year with the 49ers, he suffered a severe broken left ankle. Over the course of his career, he suffered multiple documented head injuries, including two concussions over a three game span while playing for the Oakland Raiders in 2012. On April 7, 2021, Adams committed a mass shooting in his hometown of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Armed with two firearms, he targeted a neighboring home belonging to Dr. Robert Lesslie, a prominent local physician. Adams fatally shot six people. Dr. Robert Lesslie (70) and his wife, Barbara Lesslie (69)  Their two grandchildren, Adah Lesslie (9) and Noah Lesslie (5)  Two air conditioning technicians working on the property, James Lewis (38) and Robert Shook (38). Following the shooting, Adams fled to his parents' home nearby. After a standoff with the police, during which authorities evacuated his family and used a robot to enter the home, Adams died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. He had no prior criminal record. Following his death, Adams' family agreed to have his brain tested for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) a progressive, degenerative brain disease found in people with a history of repetitive head trauma. Doctors noted that Adams' CTE was unusually severe for a 32 year old, showing significant, irreversible frontal lobe damage. This area of the brain regulates impulse control, judgment, and emotional stability.
