you are 100% correct. Mirsheimer also said Iran should have developed nukes as a deterrence. But Iran knew nukes would be too costly politically and even risky. So they developed other strategies that proved far more effective when they were attacked. If you adopt the strategy of your enemies ("what's good for the goose is good for the gander") you have to play their game. If you develop your own, they have to play your game. ✌

China's hegemonic rule will not be by force. It's a slow. soft but very firm press forward. Belts and Roads Initiative, MBridge, supply chains, and taking over industries once held by the hegemony. they will take maybe another 100 years to gain complete dominance. but it will be very difficult for them to ever be in decline. they will not need to fire that many bullets if ever at all. they won't need to set sail. just trade and control their independence. Why fight a war with bullets when you can own the machines that make the bullets.

Older states have that wisdom.
