I want to be clear that I am not blaming law enforcement in any way. My hope is simply that this message reaches those in the law enforcement community because I believe there is an opportunity for additional training when responding to combat veterans experiencing a mental health crisis. In my opinion, when officers learn that an individual is a combat veteran’s the response can sometimes involve a large police presence. While that approach may be appropriate based on the information available to responding officers, it can also unintentionally increase a veteran’s anxiety. For many combat veterans living with PTSD, an overwhelming show of force may heighten feelings of stress and trigger a fight-or-flight response rather than helping to de-escalate the situation. I know this from personal experience. I was once met by a large number of officers over what I felt was a relatively minor situation. The sheer number of officers changed my mindset and made me feel overwhelmed. Looking back, I believe that a calmer, more measured approach and active listening would have been more effective. Many combat veterans respond better when they feel they are being heard rather than confronted. When I look at Chris’s case, I see someone who appeared to need help. I do not believe this reflects a lack of professionalism on the part of the police or sheriff’s office. Instead, I believe it highlights the need for continued training and specialized crisis-response strategies for interactions involving combat veterans and PTSD. Equipping law enforcement with additional tools and resources could help improve communication, reduce unnecessary escalation, and ultimately lead to safer outcomes for everyone involved.🇺🇸🫡
